Here’s one of my biggest problems. Look just at the first details about each character (besides what kind of bender they are). Korra has a fiery personality. Bolin is expressive, high-spirited, and enthusiastic. Mako is… tall, lean, handsome? That seems to be his defining characteristic. Even though attractiveness is subjective, it’s important to know that even if you don’t think he’s good-looking, HE IS.

The reason I color coded this is to point something out. These are supposed to give us an idea of what the characters are like. We get a balance with Korra; we’re told about her personality and her training, and how they relate to get us to the present Korra. We see a LOT about Bolin’s personality and get a glimpse of how it relates to his current situation.

Then we get to Mako. We get a great amount of backstory and get a feel for his abilities far better than we got Bolin’s, and yet there’s nothing about his personality. Not even just the word “serious” or “dedicated.” The closest we get is “focused” and even that’s describing his fighting ability. We can also get through his brother’s description that they’re devoted to each other, but other than that the closest thing we get to personality is apparently not an easy-going optimist.

I think that general pattern continues throughout this first season. Korra’s personality and skills allow her to excel at pro-bending, but her personality is at odd with the skills she needs to learn as an Avatar. Bolin has a lot of personality, but doesn’t ever do much. I feel like most people like him, because of his personality, even though he hasn’t done much but talk. Mako on the other hand, hasn’t gotten much more personality, but has a lot of stuff going on in the series. We get that he’s serious, and that he likes Asami and Korra, and that he’s “confused.” Which is fine. But that’s really all we know about how he feels. And then there’s just story and skills. Lightning shooting, lightning redirecting, somehow overcoming the most powerful bloodbender who ever bloodbent… and no reason why besides he likes Korra and had a hard knock life.

Whenever there’s a problem with a fictional character, by definition, the problem lies in the writing. Mako had the potential to be an excellent character, but it seemed like they missed that opportunity. Instead of showing us HOW Mako learned to bend and redirect lightning, we’re just supposed to accept that he can.

I can’t even think of how he “resisted” the bloodbending, when we’ve only seen other, more powerful waterbenders (including Avatars) do it in the past. Even if they’d just changed the timing of Mako’s surprise attack, it would have been more organic. If he’d gotten a hand up and shot Amon in the back while he was dealing with the surprise of the Lieutenant, it would be understandable. Instead, we get this contrived sequence where, at a critical moment, Amon apparently isn’t trying (we see in the hallway that he could have Mako completely if he wanted to), but also, it’s the first time he bloodbends a person to be facing him. His grip is always from the back, so why is he suddenly in front and not trying? It just seems like the purpose of that scene is to have Mako get an epic maneuver whether or not it makes sense.

To bring this all back around, I don’t hate Mako. I just find him bland. And having the plot hinge on a bland character, even more so sometimes than the main character, throws the whole narrative off balance. Korra has learned to connect with her spiritual self and can now airbend. Mako? Mako is tall, lean, and handsome.

I think these bios are from that adventure game, Welcome to Republic City, and this sums up a big part of the problem.
